Epimenides, a 6th Century BC Cretan, created a bit
of a stir when he proclaimed "All Cretans are liars... One of their
own poets has said so." Being Cretan himself, what is the truth
value of Epimenides' statement? Epimenides himself may be a liar,
with the knowledge of an honest Cretan helping to keep the causal
universe on an even keel. Or the problem can be contrasted with
Eubilides' more succinct challenge to order: "This statement
is false." The point is that our language sometimes allows
for ambiguities and apparent contradictions that make rigorous,
logic-based analysis difficult.
Epimenides, a textual analysis engine, gives modern
analysts and managers the means by which to capture and analyze
the mass of confusing and sometimes contradictory information availabe
in natural language form. Over two decades in development, our technology
makest it possible for a machine to read text with a level of subtlety
and accuracy on a par with human readers. Being machine-read, the
volume of text that can be processed is virtually unlimited in a
given amount of time. Once processed, the information can be converted
to bit vectors of use in mathematical modeling.
Epimenides is opening a new era in understanding.
